You have to love natural light Brian! As you say, great detail (although the tail is a bit less sharp). Very nice indeed.

Agreed whenever possible natural light is the way to go. It would have been nice if I could have lined up to get the tail and wings in focus too. But hey he or she stayed still for thirteen seconds and I was focused on the eyes

I really like the image. When I read the 13 second title, I thought I'd be looking at a still life photo. Then when I saw it was a fly, I thought it must be a dead fly. But then I read your comment that it really was a still life!

Are the flies in the Phillipines more co-operative at posing than you recall the flies being up here in BC?

Yup the fly was very much alive. I'll let you in on why I get such interesting Robber Fly shots. Like most beasties they have a sliding danger zone. Stay this far a way and they ignore you. A Little closer and they stay still and watch you. A little closer and it's fight or flight time. My gear gets it's best focus just outside of the flight or fight zone. Thy tend to stay still hoping I'll go away.

I was intentional about the eyes and lost the wings and tail but I'm happy with the trade off.
