Interesting post. As loosecanon has already said, it's a civil matter in England/Wales and Northern Ireland (not sure about Scotland?) unless you organise a rave or a mass protest. Old hospitals and mental institutions seem to be popular venues - a touch of the macabre perhaps but aspect that has me puzzled is that many photographers making fine art images of nude models seem to favour abandoned buildings. Maybe it's the potential for isolation and privacy or perhaps it's the generally available space?

The answer can be found here, John, with amplification in the Scottish Outdoor Access code.

It looks like there is little or nothing to stop you taking a picture of the building but entry could be a different matter.

EDIT: Corrected URL of link to Scottish Outdoor Access code

I did the Alcatraz tour a few years ago, very clean and in the daytime.

I think the nudes in deserted buildings definitely falls under taboo and cautionary tales.

Trespass is not in most cases a crime in UK, but you must leave if requested.
My understanding of the situation here also.

I am nosey, and always inclined to follow my nose through open doors and have a peek. If challenged I'm happy to apologise and explain and retreat if asked. So far I've not encountered problems.

I am always cautious about entering derelict buildings. As regards finding nudes in deserted buildings.... no luck so far

That access through farmyards is interesting, I'd be wary of dogs and goats.

Google on "Detroit ghost city". This is one of them http://desertedplaces.blogspot.com/2...-in-decay.html. Looking at the pictures, I think the exhibition was with these pictures.

If I remember correctly, the shot of the Lee Plaza Hotel ballroom was an award winner and was featured on the cover of Professional Photographer magazine. It is a fine example of HDR done well.

This is yet another reason, a financially costly reason, not to photograph an abandoned building without permission.

This seems more a copyright issue. Entering the building without permission is criminal law, taking and publishing the photos is civil law. Only in the latter fees can be asked. Beside that, many countries among Holland, distinguish between taking the picture and publishing the picture.
There was an owner and lawyer that smelled the money.

Their approach was not only taking pictures, but also telling the story behind the pictures. A well done documentary.

Maybe off topic, but for those who are interested http://www.marchandmeffre.com/detroit.
I wondered what camera/technique they used. Huge prints and sharp at a short viewing distance.

Interesting case, one of those moments where perhaps obtaining a model release would have been in order. The photographer probably wouldn't have received one or if they did it would've costs about the same amount as the fine.
