Micron (Lexar) exiting the memory card business

A short announcement on the Micron website:

    https://www.micron.com/about/blogs/2...etail-business

I've exclusively used Lexar and SanDisk products for the past number of years. It's too bad that one of the two most reputable suppliers in the industry is getting out of the business. Both Lexar and SanDisk manufactured their own memory cards. I was a bit concerned when Western Digital bought SanDisk last year and thought they might be heading in a different direction...

If Micron sells Lexar, which the press release indicates they hope to do, Lexar will still be in business.

The normal course of action of a company is to find a buyer and then announce that the business has being sold.

It is more troubling to suggest that they are exiting the business and are willing still hoping to find a buyer (that suggests that they had no luck in finding a buyer).

It would be quite galling to buy "Lexar" products in the future - only to find they are no longer proudly made in USA.

    Not unlike some Motorola walkie-talkies I bought last week . . .

    from Wiki[edia

Lexar Media, Inc. is an American manufacturer of digital media products based in Milpitas, CA. Products manufactured by Lexar include SD cards, Memory Sticks, USB flash drives, CompactFlash cards and card readers.[1] Once a division of Cirrus Logic, Lexar leveraged its parent company's experience in building ATA controllers in developing its own flash controllers. Lexar was spun off from Cirrus Logic in 1996.[2] Lexar was created by Petro Estakhri and Mike Assar.[3]
In 2005, Lexar was awarded $380 million in a lawsuit against Toshiba who copied Lexar's flash memory technology.[4] Lexar was acquired by Micron Technology in 2006, and subsequently merged with Crucial Technology under the name Lexar Media, a subsidiary of Micron. In September 2007, Lexar extended its agreement with Eastman Kodak Company to develop and market Kodak-branded flash memory products worldwide.[5]
The Lexar JumpDrive trademark was often used synonymously with the term USB flash drives when the technology was first adopted

This is from PetaPixel: "...our source tells us that there are already prospective buyers interested in making a deal."

The State of California is so anti-business that I am very surprised any corporations remain in the state...

Micron is now an international Corporation, but they began in Idaho, not California, and they still have offices there.

I believe Richard was referring to Lexar, which is an international subsidiary of Micron and has its headquarters in California.

And how is the State of California involved in this decision of Micron/Lexar?

With so little information, it's impossible to know how or if the state and its policies are factors that might affect the outcome, but it's certainly possible that certain factors do exist.

Lexar has been acquired, sort of. See this. Notice that there is no mention of a purchase of any patents or technology portfolio; only the brand and trademarks.
