Day 17 ...
Day 17 ...
I decided to try to get some waterlily photos for today's PAD. I managed to get this picture of a Lotus flower, when I was distracted by an even more interesting subject.
This is an Amethystine Python resting in the morning sun. By the looks of his belly he is busy digesting breakfast. They are a non-venomous constrictor and are very common around Cairns including in the suburbs where this photo was taken. They grow up to 5 metres in length and, although generally harmless to humans they can, nevertheless, give you a bit of a start when they drop down from the roof at your feet as happened to me a couple of years ago when I was taking the wheely bin out.
I took this with a 150-500mm lens from about 2 metres away and, in the process, learnt a valuable lesson. Used like that the lens has a very limited DOF, so many of my photos were very unsatisfactory. I guess PAD is serving its purpose.

Today was the final Inter-school Equestrian event for the year. We had quite a lot of competitors so it was a long day of photography.
1 of the Showjumping competitions was called Top Score - all fences are allocated a points score from 10 to 200 for The Joker - all can be jumped a maximum of twice. The riders get to pick their own lines & fences that they think best suit themselves & their horses in an attempt to amass the highest score in a time limit.....
This time Our rider & 'Lady' cleared The Joker....others were not so fortunate, but the students really enjoy this format.
Thanks for your comments, Kay. I admire your actions shots, particularly, as I have not yet mastered the technique - too much to think about and it is easier when the subject is still. I am also intrigued by your signature picture. I keep thinking it is a line of burlesque dancers walking down the road

Nice... but a gentle rotation clockwise might help.
Great shot.
My wife is very impressed by the quality of the horse, rider and jump...
Sounds like you were taking photos all day so grovelling on the ground to get a more dramatic angle (looking up) would have soon become a chore, but it can make the jumps look huge....

Yes, I see what you mean... the oars are level
Built by Henry VIII. Refurbished by the Royalists during the Civil War (Fortescue). Demolished by Oliver Cromwell (General Fairfax).
And we are still waiting for the UK Government to apologize and rebuild it!
ps. I know, it really needs a nice bit of fluffy cloud in the top right corner to create a better balance.

A good day's photography in what passes for countryside round here, this is probably the best of the bird shots, mainly because s/he's the only one that got close enough to almost fill the frame at 300mm;

I also got some personal "firsts" today including a Kestrel, I'll add some later, maybe even tomorrow.
All that fresh air has made me tired

Cheers Pete
that is a very good idea ...we have been in drought here for years and as the poem says....."drought and flooding rains"....we are now experiencing the latter - so I would have been a wee bit squelchy had I tried that yesterday.
But I will try that at the February comp'......
p.s
Love your rowers btw - we have a river here with a lot of them training & competing - but I've not got there early enough, even without a hangover!
