Moon Madness with my old Fujifilm S 4200 x24 zoom

Telescopes do better in space because there is no atmosphere between them and what they are pointed at. In my case tonight there was a layer of high thin cloud that mucked up my view of the moon. Be that as it may, I'm happy with this shot.

I used my Fujifilm S4200 Bridge camera with a 24x zoom. To get this detail in an old and well used point and shoot that was designed for entry level terrestrial photography is pleasantly surprising.

The diagonal mountain range in the top left quadrant is the Montes Apenninus. The first large crater at the bottom of the range is Eratosthenes. The large bright crater just below and to the left of Eratosthenes is named Copernicus.

Quite nice Brian. I have a 100-400mm f/4.5-5,6L IS II lens than I have been meaning to use on my 7D2 camera to "shoot the moon" but, have never gotten around to it. I'd like to test out that rig against my Canon SX50HS Bridge Camera.

I'd be curious about those results. If memory serves my Fujifilm bridge is a 200mm equivalent. I believe this shot is close to what I could see in the moon with my 4.5" reflector. I am hoping that a few months from now when I have tracking capabilities that things will improve with stacking.

Weren't you contemplating a 300mm lens for astrophotography? Looks good with what you have, I've read tutorials where the author/blogger felt a 35mm lens would be sufficient for most captures. I've tried attaching my camera to a telescope and I've used my telephoto mounted on a tripod but the sometimes you can snag (one more to add to the shoot/grab/capture lexicon) a shot handheld so keep at it with whatever you have at your disposal.

Weren't you contemplating a 300mm lens for astrophotography? Looks good with what you have, I've read tutorials where the author/blogger felt a 35mm lens would be sufficient for most captures. I've tried attaching my camera to a telescope and I've used my telephoto mounted on a tripod but the sometimes you can snag (one more to add to the shoot/grab/capture lexicon) a shot handheld so keep at it with whatever you have at your disposal.

Yes I am contemplating a 300mm. And yes until then I'm going to use what I have on hand. I am curious what I can get in space with a macro lens and an old bridge camera.

Most bridge cameras are 24-28 mm equivalent at the wide end, so x24 zoom cannot be 200 mm. Google says "S4800 superzoom with stabilized 30x (24-720mm equiv.) zoom lenses."

That's right Ted, thanks for jogging my memory. I'm pretty sure that I haven't got my best moon shot with this camera. I'm feeling much less urgency to buy a 300 / 500 prime lens.
