If one has a macro lens one should now and again shoot a macro shot

I don't get out much anymore. M'lady still does. She brought this coin back from one of her trips. It may not seem like much to you but bring me home something that plays in the light and I'm a happy photographer.

It was a simple setup. Turn on room lights. Place coin in soup bowl. Attach camera to tripod and computer. Set the camera to the right parameters and auto shoot ten shots. Post processing in Capture 1 Sony Pro and stacking in Fiji. All in all I'm pleased with the results.

    ISO 100~ Shutter Speed Thirty Seconds ~ F/14 ~ House Lights & Natural Light ~ Fiji For Stacking ~ Sony Alpha a58 ~ Tamron 90 272E

Placing the coin in the soup bowl is very clever for the lighting and tabletop it produces.

That happens with me as well. The problem is that I have only one cylinder.

Agree on the use of the bowl, well done.
What I don't understand is, why stack?
I'd think at f14 you'd get as much in focus as possible from one shot.

Very nice image, love the detail it shows. I may try the same technique on some coins I have laying around here.

As you may have noted I am getting interested in DSLR astrophotography. I was trying out some Sony software for camera control. it also included taking multiple shots. Which meant that I ended up with 5 long exposure shots all with slightly different looks due to the sun playing hide and seek with the clouds. So I thought what the heck and stacked them. It did add a touch of detail.

The bowl displays some attractive tonal values, which I suspect might not have taken on the same character if you had not focus stacked to make the image.

That's one for the "how to" file. Never thought of using a white bowl. Thanks for that. Nice pic BTW.

Thanks one and all for your comments. This shot goes back to my time as a lighthouse keeper . It was often necessary to use what was on hand. Now I'm wondering if a largish fine china cup or vase would make a good light tent?

Sorry, Brian, but I don't think that this is a macro. It might have been taken with your Tamron 90mm lens but f14? 30 secs? and a complete lack of exif leads me to think that this is yet another crop.......

Tony please explain to me what F/14 and 30 seconds for an exposure have to do with it being a macro. As for cropping here's the original and for the record the coin is 2cm wide.

    Tony,

You had absolutely nothing to say of a positive nature about anything having to do with Brian's image. Instead, you only criticized his use of terminology, which he has often explained is not his strength. You would do well to be kind, to offer words of encouragement, and in the process to lighten up a bit.

For the record, I use Exif Viewer and have no problem seeing complete EXIF data for Brian's last posting of the original image.

Exif Viewer is a Firefox Browser Add-on that can be downloaded here:

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...iewer/reviews/

I don't know how well (or if) it works with other browsers, but it works flawlessly for me in Firefox.

    Tony,

Do you look for and check the Exif (if there) of every close up shot posted here to see if it conforms to some 'standard' parameters used for close up definitions, which as we all know vary?

Randy, Grahame, as of right now Brian's original image does not have any exif data.

what exactly are you looking for in the way of data that I didn't include in the description. I believe that it would be more accurate to state that you can't read my exif data because others have.

Tony, you are absolutely correct. Perhaps blogspot.com, which seems to have hosted Brian's initially posted image, stripped the exif data, but tinypic.com, which hosted his second-posted, original image, did not. I post using tinypic, and the exif data on my photos is never stripped off.
