A very unusual and interesting background that very nicely complements the subject. It might help you to know that I immediately reacted that way to your image before I read your question about whether the background works.
Consider lifting the tones of the stems so they don't appear as a silhouette, though doing so might create unwanted noise.
Also consider adding a very slight (barely noticeable) vignette that concentrates the viewer's eye on the subject and adds a bit more depth to the image.
Beautiful; is this mulberry ?
I would consider cropping differently to lose some of the out of focus stems from the left side? Otherwise, this looks OK.
Lovely photo
Jim, not my favourite background .
Mike suggests "lifting the tones of the stems" but they appear to be black to me and therefore tricky to lift!
But Mike's suggestion for some vignette seems sound, although I'd suggest a lot of vignette.
An absolutely lovely image.
Dave
Thanks all for taking the time to comment, appreciated.
Mike and Tony thanks for advice on how to improved the image. Will play around with your suggestions.
Nandakumar, I these these are blackberries.
FYI: This was taken in a group of pine trees so the background are pine needles laying on the ground.

I like it. Just a little vignette though. That is only my opinion.
Cheers Ole
