Wine: When was the last time you...

When was the last time you bought wine bottles that have no foil? That happened to me for the first time just a few days ago. Perhaps the reason is that I bought them at the winery. My wife asked how we know that the wine hasn't been tampered with after the cork was added to the bottle? I countered by asking how we know that any wine hasn't been tampered with before the cork was added to the bottle? The answer to both questions is that we never know.

Notice also that the corks aren't in the same direction relative to the top of each bottle. That's another oddity. However, setting up the image so the lettering on the corks are displayed to be properly read from left to right made a lot nicer composition than if all three corks had been inserted in the same direction. EDIT: See Post #4 displayed later in the thread.

A photo of the same wine displaying the rest of the bottle is displayed in this thread.

    Setup
The tabletop is black fabric. A medium continuous-light lamp is above the scene close to the subjects on the left side. A white reflector laid flat on the tabletop in front of the subjects brightens the bottom of the forward cork. Another one on the right side handheld on top of the rear bottle creates the reflection on the top of the neck of the forward and rear bottles. The rear reflection was necessary to create separation between the bottle and the tabletop. The forward reflection was unnecessary but at the least is appealing.

Nicely composed, regarding the foil its not something I pay attention to when purchasing; but it is something I moan about when opening the bottle.

    Thanks, John!

About removing the foil, I have found that the only universal foil remover that is truly universal is a knife. Even so, I prefer the kind of remover that is twisted around the top. I resort to using a knife or corkscrew for the few bottles that are too large for the kind that twists.

My wife advised me that if I had simply rotated the middle bottle to display the other side of the cork, I would have realized that the corks are printed on both sides in opposite directions to ensure that it doesn't matter which direction the cork is inserted in the bottle.
