A jumper on my deck

I haven't been taking or posting many insect (or other arthropod) photos in some time. Yesterday, I was cleaning my deck and noticed this jumper on the nylon cover of my grill (hence the ugly black background of one of the photos). I ran inside and assembled my gear, which takes some time: mounting an extension tube and my macro lens on my 7D, putting on my kludgy DIY bracket, attaching my also kludgy DIY diffuser on my flash, mounting the flash and cable, positioning the flash, putting on a ring, and attaching my monopod. Amazingly, the critter was still sitting there when I finally got back outdoors.

Both are 1/125, f/13, ISO 200, diffused flash, 36mm extension, 100mm lens. The front-facing one is about a 50% crop; the other is a more modest crop. Processed only modestly in LR.

Glad that the jumper had the decency to wait for you Dan Both are good but there is something about the almost confrontational look of the first that gives it the edge for me.

Thanks, all. I prefer the first one also. I put the camera on the deck surface and gradually moved forward. It's a technique I have often used with dragonflies and damselflies, which seem to be slightly less skittish when not approached from above. I have done this often enough that I actually wore down the edge of the aluminum ring of a protective filter--one reason I always use one when hunting bugs.
