    Full Moon

I wanted to experiment with a different focusing technique (for me) on last night's moon. I ended up with perhaps the sharpest image I've taken of the moon so far. What do you think? Canon 1Ds Mark iii, Canon 500mm f/4.0L, manual focus using live view (10x), lens stabilizer OFF. Taken at f/4.0, 1/1600 sec @ ISO 400. The fast shutter speed was reduce camera/lens vibration... this seemed to work nicely since lots of small detail is revealed between 12:00 and 4:00 on the moon's edge. Does this look over-sharpened?

Does not seem over-sharpened to me, Paul.

    Is it sepia-toned deliberately?

I downloaded it to play with contrast (RawTherapee Wavelets), but nothing I have will open it - and ExifTool says the file-type is HTML/text even tho' the extension is '.jpg'. Just saying.

    [edit] must be a Photobucket thing . . .

Not particularly oversharpened, it has been a while since I've done lunar; was the entire object within the focusing frame? Did you try other apertures?

    Paul,

Sort of found the answer to the first question, I was shooting at 600mm and the focus indicator covered only a portion of the moon and I had it placed on the edge.

Full moons are notorious for lack of detail. To my tired old eyes the center looks out of focus. Perhaps try the settings again as it wanes?

    Then please explain:

    Full Moon
    Full Moon

    Full Moon

According to JPEGsnoop it is the downloaded file that has a problem, not my machine.

I can only assume that you downloaded something different than what I did. Do you have a URL for your exact download?

The edge does not look over sharpened to me Paul.

And if the edge is sharp (assuming a lot of PP has not been done to achieve this) from my understanding it's impossible to get the front/centre not sharp?

When I focused in Live View, I used the edge of the moon. This provided the best clarity for focus. I think at 239,000 miles, if the edge is in focus, the center should also be in focus. There is not much detail to be seen when the moon is full since the light is very flat. I normally shoot half moons since this reveals impressive craters along the terminator. Last night was just a test of technique. I did get surprising detail (for me) along the edge of the moon I had not gotten before. Thanks for the comments and suggestions. When I reshoot in two weeks, I'll post the result.

I right-clicked Paul's image and used "save image as".

That's what I did too, so it'll remain a mystery, not worth bothering with.

    This page's HTML reads:

    Code:
    <a onclick="ga('send', 'event', 'Outgoing', 's1362.photobucket.com', '/user/prsearls/media/Moon%20and%20Stars/Full_Moon_zpsz9megphv.jpg.html');" href="http://s1362.photobucket.com/user/prsearls/media/Moon%20and%20Stars/Full_Moon_zpsz9megphv.jpg.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"><a href="http://i1362.photobucket.com/albums/r689/prsearls/Moon%20and%20Stars/Full_Moon_zpsz9megphv.jpg" class="highslide" onclick="ga('send', 'event', 'Outgoing', 'i1362.photobucket.com', '/albums/r689/prsearls/Moon%20and%20Stars/Full_Moon_zpsz9megphv.jpg');return hs.expand(this)"><img src="http://i1362.photobucket.com/albums/r689/prsearls/Moon%20and%20Stars/Full_Moon_zpsz9megphv.jpg" border="0" alt="Full Moon" onload="HSImageResizer.createOn(this);" /></a><btr /></a></div>
The URL I asked you for is in there several times but my none of my apps likes it at all. No idea why so I'll leave it alone, was only going to play with Paul's image anyhoo . . .

All's well that ends well. Returning to my computer, Paul's picture had "fixed itself" so I got to play after all.

Way over the top, unleashing the power of RT deconvolution sharpening and wavelet processing:
