Blue jar on a red background

This past weekend I bought a glass jar so I can add it to a collection of glass jars on a shelf in our sun room and, of course, so I could photograph it.

    Setup
First capture: The tabletop and background are a single sheet of red presentation board. A small continuous-light lamp flagged with matte black aluminum foil to control dispersion of its light is above the scene behind the subject and lights the background, tabletop and the subject's body. The purple-pink light in the jar's body is the red light reflected from the background mixing with the translucent, blue glass.

Second capture: The background is translucent vellum. A flash unit behind the background shining toward the subject and camera is fitted with diffusion material to reduce its brightness. That's because the flash's lowest output was too bright.

Parts of the bottle's neck and top in the second capture were merged with the first capture.

I really like this for the soft colors and how they work together.

    Mike,
Very interesting shot with good composition, beautiful complimentary colours and well controlled lighting.
My only nit is the rather dark and undefined area of the stopper, although I'm not sure exactly how it could be overcome. Perhaps a low-powered, snooted flash or even a simple reflector to throw a bit of light onto it.
Nevertheless, an interesting study well handled.

    Thanks, guys!

Robert: Though the stopper is dark by design, I'm having no trouble immediately seeing the distinction between its various parts and shapes when viewing the photo on my calibrated monitor and my uncalibrated television.

I have created a second thread to display a very different presentation of the same subject.

Very eye-catching and I like the colours, Mike. Because of its "seeming" simplicity I prefer this one to your other take, which is also very good.
