    Staithes North Yorkshire

In my recent Saltburn thread I made reference to Staithes and said I would create a separate thread for it. Staithes is a little fishing village North of Whitby in North Yorkshire. I used to spend some of my school summer holidays there in the late 1950's. Staithes hasn't changed very much since those days, it is a lovely little spot.

I hope you enjoy your little tour around Staithes, I shall look forward to your comments.

#1 The harbour from Cowbar, I was aware that the tide would be out but I was with two companions that I was helping out with their photography skills. I have posted an image from this viewpoint on here previously.

#2 Looking down on the harbour. It would appear the fishing is picking up given the number of boats in the harbour.

#3 Looking back towards the village (portrait version). Image #2 above was taken from above the higher cottage with the two dormer roof windows and the hillside behind it.

#4 Looking back towards the village (landscape version). The fourth boat from the left in the centre row is a traditional wooden "Cobble".

Lovely shots of a wonderful location, Peter - I must try to get there some time. My favourite would be #3 (but with less sky, e.g. a 4:5 crop).

    Cheers.

What a charming little place Peter, and you've captured it so well. There's something about the composition, light and processing that makes no 3 really stand out for me - and I like it just the way it is

We have visited Whitby which was very nice but I'm now dis-appointed we didn't get to this spot!

Thanks everyone I pleased you like Staithes, I left the telephone distribution pole in the third image just for Dave, it may be difficult to see at this size of image but it's there and in #1 Staithes North Yorkshire

Well thank you Peter, some people think they're a blot on the landscape but I think they're a thing of beauty

    Hi Peter,

Nice set, I don't think I have visited Staithes in my Yorkshire trips

I feel I should be honoured (if I'm the right "Dave" that is)

I think I see the one you are referring to.

    Thanks,
    Dave

Dave I would recommend a visit to Staithes if you're ever near by.

I was actually referring to both your good self and Dave (DJE) it seems we all may have had a background in communications, possibly with Gods Poor Orphans but certainly in my case .

I started here in the antipodes with the Postmaster General's Department (PMG). I'm not aware of any alternative definition for that acronym.

Wonderful series... This is a part of England that gets almost no press here in the USA which is a shame - or maybe it is a boon to the residents - no groups of tourists in straw hats and shorts mucking up every day life.

A lovely looking little town and well presented. All nicely composed and well executed images. Looks like my kind of place.

Pter...#1 is OK despite the tides...I like the compositions in all of them. Clouds in #1 is very nice. In #2 the blues are more pronounced..would it be my new monitor I do not know but I like the punch it shows me here. #3 is nice too. #4 is exceptional but I still prefer #1 in this selection.

Peter, there is something about the first image that doesn't look quite right to me. Although the horizon is correctly aligned, the buildings appear to be leaning slightly to the left. The subtle difference of a small transformation improves the image for me.

(If you'd rather I hadn't posted this edit of your image, let me know and I'll remove it.)

    Cheers.

Thanks Philip, I have looked back at my processing of the raw file and whilst I had used both the lens correction in Lightroom and a guided upright! (I suspect on the yellow house on the left) tweak, I can see that the buildings to the right of the beck were leaning. I then checked your edit using a grid and that edit has made those on the right much closer to vertical. Thanks for spotting my error, I shall have to take more care when using a guided upright in Lightroom .
