    A Few PWS Land/sea/island Scapes

This summer I tried(with limited success) to do a little more landscape photography during our trips on Prince William Sound. After all who knows how many more times we'll see it or if ever again for that matter. One thing that always fascinates me is the hundreds of small islands out there. So I attempted to capture a few in a manner that reflects how I remember them.

    Nikon D810 w/24-120 f4

    1) Shot between rain showers from an anchorage.

    2) For some reason this one makes me think of wizards. Shot from a kayak on the opposite side of the bay as no.1.

    3) Our view as we drifted and ate breakfast. This with D810/70-200 f4.

    A Few PWS Land/sea/island Scapes

    4) Evening view from another anchorage. The FG is two islands.

    A Few PWS Land/sea/island Scapes

    5) Same spot next morning. Minor differences in comp due to boat swinging on the anchor.

A good set Dan and it's No 4 and No 2 for me.

Edit : No 5 is the one I meant not No 4

2 and 5 are the exceptional ones for me. Here's why:

Two: The yellow lichen/moss and more distant/desaturated background help a ton with subject isolation. The cloud crossing through the image helps even more, and grants depth/layers. The reflection in the foreground grants yet more depth. Out of all the images here, this one has by far the best separation of a foreground subject and so it works far and away the best. Balance is pretty good too, roughly rule of thirds it looks like.

Five: Deeper shadows, more dramatic lighting, and the presence of both warm and cool light in the scene give it a lot of power. I think this image is technically not as good as two, but it is beautiful and has presence.

Enjoyed the whole set, a lovely place.

Any one of these would have been well worth a positive comment but to have five superb images - made my day. Thanks for posting them Dan.

What beauty. Looks like a most enjoyable way to spend some time. #2 and 5 are real standouts for me.

Gorgeous! Another vote for #5 for sure (those colors and reflection are beautiful), and I also think #1 is very nice (I like the mood, with the soft colors and fog). Very well done.

That was also my immediate reaction and that happened before I read your text. This image is the standout photo for me because of the combination of light, color, composition, wispy clouds and perspective.

Lovely set of images. No. 2 for me as well. As for what it reminds you of, it is the Hogwarts Sorting Hat - but you knew that already.

Thanks for the additional comments, folks.

John I had to Google Hogwart. I seem to be one of the dozen or so people in the western world who haven't read/seen Harry Potter.

But did you see the resemblance?

Certainly. Perhaps that's why wizards come to mind as Gandalf wore a similar hat though not quite as tattered.

A great set of photos! My definite favourite is #1. An obvious attraction is the way the colours of the islet stand out against the rest of the image. But I think there's some other reason which I can't put my finger on precisely.

I actually shot several versions of that composition. The photo was taken from our anchorage. It had been drizzling and the rain moved up the bay as it cleared. The shot posted here was the optimum combination of no rain between camera and island but the BG was still obscured enough to be mostly faded out. A few minutes prior the island was obscured and a few minutes later there was too much color and detail in the BG. The intent was to essentially create a portrait of the island. Unfortunately I wasn't positioned to shoot the island in no.2 under the same atmospheric conditions. That would have been awesome.

All great shots again, Dan. #1 and #2 seemed to be floating and I love them both too. #2 for me.
