The Atlas Moth, also known as the Snake Head Moth due to the design on its wings is one of the largest moths in the world. I am guestimating that this lady has a wingspan of 9 inches.
Once she was out of her cocoon, she flew to our glass wall where she will await the arrival of a male. Hopefully she has chosen a good place and the breeze will carry her scent to any males in the neighborhood.
This is a rare and beautiful moth. How beautiful you can see for yourself. How rare? In almost six years this is the third time I have been able to photograph one.
