I generally try to time the action and shoot at 3fps in situations like this. I watch the bird while it's at a distance to try to time the species actions then hope for good luck. We were on an excursion from the ship and the guides knew where the action would be. They threw out some dead fish making the timing a bit easier since I knew where the grab would take place.

Sometimes I get the luck. In the case of the previous two images, one was a clean miss but in the case of the claws extended, the grab was successful. The next frame I shot is below.


There were some gulls around too.

Brian, they look like the birds were banded (in technicolour) for research purposes.
