    A few more rescue portraits...

    Ella...
She came to us with a skin condition that our dermatology vet diagnosed as an allergy to meats. She is on a non-grain vegetarian diet, and gets bathed daily with an anti allergic shampoo. Ella is doing great...
    A few more rescue portraits...

    Poppy...
Poppy came to us needing surgery to repair a fractured leg. Our orthopedic vet placed some pins in her leg to stabilize the bones and now she can run around like all the other dogs...
    A few more rescue portraits...

    Bitsey...
There is really nothing wrong with Bitsey except that she is an old lady, well over ten years old. We brought her to our eye specialist vet who said that although she had the beginnings of cataracts, she really didn't need anything but eye-drops twice daily. Bitsey's teeth are gone but she does very well on soft food and treats...
    A few more rescue portraits...

I was just at the Maltese Rescue California, Board of Directors meeting and found out that in the last twelve months we have spent right at $75,000 U.S. Dollars for medical care of our rescue dogs. That is by far the largest expenditure of our rescue group since much of the other costs are funded by our volunteers. As an example, Judy and I average over 25,000 miles a year in support of the rescue operations. We do not get reimbursed for that but are able to claim 14-cents a mile as a deduction on our income taxes. If we were a business instead of a non-profit agency, we could claim 53-cents per mile

    Lovely photos and interesting comments.

How old is Ella? Does the vet expect her allergy to meat to be lifelong or perhaps one that may pass?

    Thanks Bruce...

Ella is three or four years old (we often don't know the exact age of our rescue dogs). She will probably be allergic to meat for the rest of her life. However, after about a month, she will not require the daily anti allergen bath...

You've got these shots down, Richard. Who could resist adopting the little creatures?

Our rescue cat that we adopted a couple of years ago is allergic to some types of meat but she can eat a duck based vet food. Once she was on that and living in a safe environment her coat has fortunately looked wonderful.

I am fortunate in that I have the help of my wife when photographing the dogs. I certainly could not do as well alone...

Notice her finger in some of the shots, in other shots she is holding the white show-lead which I generally get rid of in Photoshop.

I have really been increasing my keeper rate as a result of standardizing my set ups. Here are my SOOC images of the POPPY shoot...

I look for little things, the eye position, the tilt of the head and occasionally need to get rid of big guffaws like an open mouth or closed eyes...

Regarding Ella, when we bring her to an adoption event - she is always a hit. She is so lively and personable. But when people learn her age, they pass her by. I can't really blame them all that much. On the good side, Ella will always have a loving home with us and we are not trying to push her out the door...

Richard, will you be fostering some (all?) of these?

I don't expect that we will be doing any long term fostering of these dogs. Our members in the L.A. area have opted to do that. However, I am sure that we will be doing some very short term fostering since our local vet is excellent and gives us a wonderful discount. We will probably shuffle all of these dogs (they are, I think, all females) through our home so that we can get them to the vet early in the morning. We usually keep the dogs due for spaying or neutering on the night before he surgery and then keep them the night of their surgery so they can recover without having to do any traveling.

Judy and I are going to a family reunion in the Lake Tahoe area on the California/Nevada border. Our nephew is getting married there and virtually the whole family is showing up for the ceremony and the family reunion...

Judy made it known that she needed a respite from any heavy fostering duties so that we can attend the reunion.
