    Monarch caterpillar

My wife discovered these on our butterfly weed plants. This is the first time we've seen these on our flowers in forty years. I counted seven of them on three plants. We will be watching them every day to watch their development into their next stage (chrysalis) and finally emerge as new butterflies. I haven't done much macro this summer so this is merely a cropped image from my Sony a6500 with a 50mm lens (75mm equivalent on a 35mm camera). This guy seemed to enjoy eating a late blossom on the plant.

If Nature cooperates, I'll get more photos as these develop over the next few weeks.

Paul...the only place I have seen one of this was in Florida. My husband's best friend used to have a butterfly garden. She captured one one day and put it in a bottle and photographed each stage of development. It's been a long time since I had seen one of this but last Monday after setting up my camera for the eclipse I saw a monarch but can't stand up from where I was. I left my cell phone inside the house and so I cannot tell hubby to get my other camera. You are so lucky to see this one at this stage of its development....I will await your next update...it will be an exciting project. Very pretty....
