And I've just been advised by Ted's Camera store that I can snap one up for a measly $5200.

I'd like one but that would require a major cover-up in the domestic finances

A few decades ago America began using off-balance sheet financing. No cover up needed. You might want to give it a whirl.

Thank you for the suggestion Mike but I think I'll pass on that.

I hope you live longer as an average camera model.
Or did you think of a birthday present.

If GOD wanted you to have one, HE would have given a sign - like covering up part of the sun

Thanks, Paul. Yes I'm quite content with my D810 for a while. Besides Nikon's history of quality problems over the past few years has stopped me being an early adopter of new models. I can wait until they start showing up on the used market. Though with the higher frame rate that could be a single body that does everything that I need. Presumably the frame rate is one or two frames higher when shooting in crop mode as it is with the 800/810. That might lure me in a little sooner than I'd like. But will definitely wait until reports come in on sensor performance before getting too excited.

Note the D850 has the same pixel pitch as the D500/7500 (20MP DX x 2.25 = 45MP FX). They must feel like they've found a sweet spot in sensor design.

AND having the release date on your birthday. That's a good point, Richard. I may have to re-think this...

Showing up here at $4399.95 CDN + taxes, looks like $5200.00 Au is a rip off of close to $750.00 Au.

    Cheers: Allan

Brilliant idea Dave. I'll let you test the waters.

    Dan and Allan

The Aus pricing probably is over the top, it tends to be like that here. I could probably do better than $5200 if i shopped around though.

Yes Dan it will be interesting to see how the sensor performs with the backlighting and how it compares to the Canon 5DS 50MP sensor.

One other thing that caught my attention in the release notes was Wireless triggering with ALS . I'm interested to see what that involves and whether new Speedlight models will become available.

The pixel pitch may be the same but as the sensor is back illuminated the pixels should benefit from a larger surface area compared to standard sensors. This should reduce noise. We will start getting proper reviews and test results late September.

I haven't heard too much of why anyone (who already owns a camera) wants the D850. I reviewed the specifications and there were only a few aspects that stood out:

    1. High megapixel count
    2. Extended ISO range-I've only seen one camera (D500) that benefits from this range.
    3. 4K video
    4. Multiple media formats (1XQD, XQD, SD, SDHC)
    5. 915gm body-about 200gms heavier than previous versions.

Does any of these features merit the upgrade?

    Yep...certainly the first four...
