    Memory Card Error Message

I got one of those pesky messages (card damaged) near the end of a shoot, I have a two slot system so I immediately switched cards and hoped I could recover any images on the affected card. I was able to view already captured images on the preview screen so thought everything should be fine. Inserted the suspect card into my laptops reader and drive and images appeared as they should. Transferred images to computer and so far so good. Included the link as it showed steps for recovery and possible steps to verify integrity of the suspect card. I will probably replace for now and test the card on another camera.

I'm glad you managed to recover the images from the card. I have in the past recovered images from a card after a schoolboy error but have yet to experience what you've described John.

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for the comments, first time I've seen it happen as well. Interesting that last recording image on suspect card was DSC 7763 and first on new card was 7765.

I don't know if this is related to my issue or if it is just a coincidence.

The SDHC card I had issue with was a Lexar 32GB, I was going to check and see if Lexar had a read/write test.

Meaning the error happened when writing 7764.

Yes, when I caught sight of the error message I quickly switched slots just so I would be able to find the card later; I knew the event would be ending soon so expected to have enough space on the card. I wonder if I had either not noticed the error message or tried to force it to perform if the outcome would've been different.

You're sure it wasn't a FULL message? I don't know what your camera is showing.
Format it and check it with some tool that performs many read/write actions.

Some good tips on this video, most have been covered on this forum; I'm going to try the format card tip and see what happens and will also do the read/write test.

I believe Lexar cards have a lifetime guarantee. I would check with Lexar on getting a replacement for it.

lifetime guarantee - is that lifetime of the card (sorry card has come to end of its life), or lifetime of company (Lexar ceasing to exist)

I do the occasional full format of cards which should mark defective segments of the card so they are not used, with a final format in camera.

At this point Lexar is still owned by Micron (the company that makes the flash memory using in Lexar cards), so the company policies that are currently in place are still valid. If it is sold or shut down, that could be a different story; the new owners could change the warranty terms and conditions.

If the card is physically damaged through "misuse", then there might be an issue, but electronic failures (other than by applying a damaging power source to the contacts), should be covered.

    Re: Memory Card Error Message

I have only lost images on one shoot due to memory card failure. This was years ago with a new Kingston 16GB CF card. I "tested" the card by looking at the images shown on my LCD which seemed fine. So I did the shoot using the card. When I tried to download images to my computer, I could not. I tried a "rescue program" and that did not help either.

Fortunately this was not an important shoot and I was shooting with two cameras so, I lost less than half of what I had shot for the day. Unfortunately, I had not kept the original receipt from the purchase of the card.

I had used several Kingston cards previously and had no problems with them. These were 2GB and 4GB models. This was at a time when memory was quite a bit more expensive than it is on today's market. Fry's Electronics offered a 16GB Kingston card at quite a low price so I tried another but, I kept the original receipt. I also tried downloading images to my computer. NO LUCK! That card was defective also. I got my purchase price back from Frys and was the last Kingston card that I ever used.

I have used Lexar cards since then and have had no problems with them...

I don't have any idea whether formatting will solve whatever is wrong with your card, but as the video says, all cards should be formatted in the camera before they are used. The conservative approach, which I follow, is to format the card in the camera each time after one uploads the images from it. I do this routiinely(after the images have been backed up, of course). I don't think you indicated whether you had already formatted the card in your camera. If you had, and particularly if you do it routinely, then I am guessing something else may be the problem. In that case, my own preference would be to throw it out. Fortunately, SD cards have become very cheap--32 GB SanDisk SD cards range from $13 to $21 at B&H--so replacing defective ones has become less painful.

I think I formatted it when I installed which was about two years ago, I have gotten into the habit of not formatting between shoots but instead batch delete the images. I delete only in the case I need to do a card recovery, in the past when I used to format frequently I would lose a lot if I needed to do a rescue. I decided to format the card and test if all is well, did a 2 hour shoot today and everything was fine but I'm hesitant to trust fully.

When the card can be emptied completely always format it. In the camera. Saver, easier and faster.

Have a look at this post from an ex-Lexar employee.
It won't help in your current situation but might in the future.
