Not my shot but maybe one day

I first saw this shot of the Lagoon nebula in Cloudy Nights. Then i went to the Facebook page and got the URL. This is what 30 yes thirty hours of imaging and superb skills can achieve.

Now it is copywrited and it is huge so loading it here is perhaps not prudent or legal. Nevertheless it is worth clicking on the above link.

30 hours? My goodness. I might spend that many hours finding subject matter but the photo itself takes hundredths of a second.

Plus a black and white astro camera probably cooled. The filters are rather narrow band so don't let much light though. Then assign some colour to each filter. There are some standards for this that Hubble and others use.

All I did need until the street lights were changed was a single filter to block the sodium line. Hardly any light loss at all.

I'm not sure what I need. My bottom line is that my skies are tropical which means I rarely have a night without clouds or haze. Not so critical for visual but a game changer for photography.

Hopefully today, maybe tomorrow my new tripod with a pan and tilt head will arrive. This will allow me to purchase and use heavier gear.

Skywatcher Star adventurer and a lens or two are next on the list. Then I'll see how things go.

I don't have the patience for 30 hours of processing. I am just a simple person with simple taste. A loooooooonnnnnnnnggggggg time ago might have made a difference but I doubt it.

Brian, it does not matter what age one is pushing to. It is the fulfilment of a dream/wish that matters. I love knowing or seeing people smile or emote a kind of happiness that s/he wishes come true. It is called life.

If you stay with the camera, yes.

You do some each night and probably don't stay by the camera - dependent on the gear that is available it can be fairly automated.

It's the Lagoon Nebula. This fellow has a setup where he can shoot x number of shots on one night and come back the next night to continue the process. way out of my league.

It can all be done remotely fairly inexpensively from a PC George. Even from a tablet actually these days. He's used 3 filters each of which restrict the frequency of the light they let through. What he may have done is one of the filters one night, another the second night and so on. They were probably done over more nights than that though. The star positions are little like a clock so if he shoots at some specific time the stars will be in the same position at some other time on another day so that would be when the next shots would be taken. To be honest I am not sure how much variation in star position from one night to another matters. They are a long long way away so parallax errors are going to be small.

He's used a black and white camera. People often do because they are more sensitive than colour cameras. He has then decided to use a specify colour for each of the filters to form a colour image. Another technique that is sometimes used with black and white cameras is to use r, g and b filter and do the same thing.

Sadly the photo gear is probably rather expensive. The mount that the telescope is on may or may not be relatively speaking. Telescopes are much the same. It's looks like the one he used currently costs 1900 euro but in many ways something like an 8" newtonian should be able to produce similar results. That's assuming I have found some details on the same person.

I wouldn't that long even...I'd give up photography altogether if that is the case and will never look at another camera again for the rest of my natural life. ha!

It makes sense to look through a telescope via a camera Izzie. They are more sensitive to light than our eyes so for any size of telescope tend to show more. They see more slowly though so neglecting some problems the longer they look the more they see.

30hrs though - was that needed really? It's hard to be sure. Some will use excessive times, some moderate and some as short as is possible. It's an area that can attract a certain amount of pride - the longer it is etc.

He's also used filters. They don't let much light through and there isn't much of it.. He's used 3 filters so that's 3 sets of shots.

Hard to know what he would have being doing during the 30hrs but very probably wasn't sitting by the telescope for any length of time at all.
