I set the alarm for silly o'clock and drove an hour out to some woods where there is still a decent population of Red Squirrels. The light at first was terrible so I was bumping up against the performance limit of the Fuji and my 55-200mm lens plus I needed a fair bit of patience while lying in the leaf litter but I still got some shots I was happy with.

    Re: Reds

It was worth the alarm at silly o'clock. Very well worth it.

The second one has the light bokeh across the head, but the other two are really top notch. Very well done, Robin.

    Re: Reds

I agree with Donald. In the last one, there seems to be another squirrel poking its head above the forward foot. Considering getting rid of it.

Nice series Robin, looking at the last image I think the second squirrel may me a hazelnut. But I could be wrong Reds
Does the location have two words the first of which starts with "P" the second being "Hill" ?

Thanks Donald - I had the camera on the ground to get the bokeh ball things behind the squirrel as I'd noticed them creeping into the viewfinder when I was crouched down. Not everyones cup of tea but it makes a change?

Thanks Mike - there was only one squirrel about at a time, think its just nuts and feed.

The location does start with a P

Worth a dodge along if you get a chance Peter as the reds are bold enough to come close if you sit still and down wave huge lenses at them.

In the first shot, Robin -- is that squirrel looking at you thinking, what the heck is that nut (man) doing down there? You must have looked strange to that squirrel. That was a brilliant shot! The rest them are all good too.

I like all of these. Beautifully sharp. The second one is a classic pose but my favourite would be the first. Reminds me of myself first thing in the morning. One hand to steady and one for a good scratch.

I think that it's just a crescent (eye) shaped gap under its claw Mike.

    Re: Reds

Yes I'd say it was worth the time/effort. Nice set. The pose in the first image is awesome. The BG detracts from the second.

These are much redder than what we call red squirrels over here. Ours are red-ish by comparison. Mostly grey with red highlights is how I would describe them.

Gosh they are red like a fox. Love the first one especially - they are certainly a nice set.

    Re: Reds

The second shot was a deliberate effort to include the OOF circles produced by. the trees - now I rather like that in my pictures but it seems I'm in the minority.

I do have more conventional backgrounds...
