The V & A, Dundee.

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, is creating a new outpost in Dundee, a city once more famous for jute mills, whaling and, in in later times, poverty and social deprivation, than it's cultural ambitions.

Yes, Dundee's has got its challenges, but the local authority, for which I used to work, has taken the lead in working to re-generate the city. It's easy to knock Dundee. But I'm very proud to have worked there.

Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. The design is a way of reconnecting the city to its historic River Tay waterfront.

Very nice image Donald. And congratulations to the architect on the design. While being thoroughly modern, it seems to complement the more traditional architecture that surrounds it.

Hi Donald,

I like the bit of story that makes the image more meaningful. From a composition standpoint the museum may be too effective at tying the river to the city. My eyes were drawn first to the black building in the lower right third, up through the village and ending at the monument on the hill. Having read your story I had to go back and scan for the building you were talking about. Of course once I saw it, it is a fifth of the frame and hard to miss, but I wanted to pass on what my "virgin" eyes saw the first pass through.

I wish I had advice on how to draw they eyes toward the museum instead of away from it. That's a problem I have in a lot of my architectural photos so I am very keen to hear if anyone else has any ideas.

That's nicely done Donald. I have never been to Dundee but apart from showing off the museum, it must bring out the character of the city, showing as it does, the tiers of houses progressing up the hillside. Every home seems to have a view?

To me there are three compositions here, they don't work as one for me unless the goal is to show an encroachment upon the forested area. The background and middleground work well together, the shoreline might work if not for the dizzying architecture.

Nice overall image of the town, Donald. My initial reaction is similar to what Mike described. The museum seems to be camo and requires a second look. If that was the architect's intent then I'd say mission accomplished.

I may be being a bit fanciful but viewing the image once more, it seems to me that what the architect has done is to produce a structure reminiscent of a ship or ships in build - bow section to the left and a stern section to the right. Set with the river in the FG and against the city behind, to me, the image as a whole succeeds in bringing out just what the Architect intended; that is to say it is intended to reconnect the city to its waterfront heritage.
