Sunsets at sea are odd particularly when you are rounding a headland like that and the angle of the sun refracting through the water droplets is changing. In this case the coloring was a light pink/purple as in the first image and then the reds appeared, we moved into a fog bank a couple of minutes after that and it was all gone.
