    Day 26: October 2010 PAD

Today we are able to reveal in a world exclusive, the real reason behind the recent reclusive nature of Australian fashion diva/international actress/model..."Portia"
Not since the Victoria Derby of 1965 has the melbourne fashion world been rocked by such a scandal as we can reveal to you today!
Despite commendable efforts by Portia's sister "Sharntelle" to divert the spotlight by involving herself in a sheep rustling episode in Wales.
We are still able to reveal that Portia (who in recent months was often glimpsed wearing a flowing maxi dress) has recently given birth and left the baby to be cared for by a 'Rugby-Mum' in the suburbs of a regional Victorian town outside of Melbourne!

    Day 26: October 2010 PAD

It is believed that she chose to attend the Victorian Spring Racing carnival as the guest of a Naval Captain and parade in the Fashions on the Field competition (in preference perhaps to pacing the hallway with a colicky baby!)

The paternity of the babe is as yet unconfirmed, however a spokesman for the Victorian Shadow Minister for 'special projects' declined to comment when contacted by this reporter....

Is there nothing sacred? Is there no secret that can be hidden from the prying lenses of the low-life paparazzi? Portia will be responding through her lawyers just as soon as she stitches up a deal with the Womens Weekly. At this point all she wants to say is that she is cut to the quick by the ignominy, the opprobrium and scandalous infamy of these allegations and will be defending her honour with vigour through the appropriate channels. She denies that her dear sister Hortense (see Pad 25) has changed her name to Sharntelle and taken up with a gang of sheep rustlers in Wales. And as for the Rugby-Mum and baby Typhanniii, well, anyone can clearly see through that story. That "Mum" would never make a front row forward. She must be an Aussie Rules Mum.

Anyway this whole affair has shaken me so badly that I forgot to take a photo today. You will have to put up with one from last Saturday when my mind was more settled.

Re: Day 26: October 2010 PAD

Today we have had very cold rain (about 40 F) and winds of 35-40 mph coming out of the north. The old fisherman sage says "No fishermen go forth" and that applies to this photographer as well. Since it is forecast to become a bit worse as the day goes on I set up Olympus E-510 with my Vivitar 75-260mm f/4.5 lens. This monster goes on a tripod almost all the time anyway so shooting out our picture window and with a couple of cooperative models I got a number of fairly good shots. It is so dark that I had to use ISO 800 which is a bit noisy. Both of the shots I show were at 260mm wide open (f/4.5).

This I call Wee Cold Birdie which required 1/20th sec exposure. Didn't she sit still nicely?

    Day 26: October 2010 PAD
This is Hungry Lady, one of my favorite squirrels. She chews thoughtfully and held still for 1/6th second

    Blistered door

A few layers of history...mostly pointing towards a poor maintenance regime .
    No it's not my door! It's on a house we're working on...honest.

There's got to be a book in some of the nonsense (with respect to Portia, her extended family and, now, her offspring) we post up on here.

It's wonderful and is the perfect antidote to a sh...... day at work!

But I would just remind you that my day job is in child protection. So, if anyone feels there has been neglect of the child just let me know.

    Grading Crabs

Strong winds with rain today so, in desperation, I went to the quay where this merchant was size grading crabs prior to dispatch.

My PAD album for October 2010

It's really hard to believe I shot this in the kitchen under kitchen strip lights. Ah well, that's photography.

If you loved me it would be orchids...

Good shot, my friend. Good colours and detail. I might have tried to get all of his legs in, but I know how difficult these shots are.

    Day 26 October PAD

Busy in the morning at the house, the afternoon turned wet and windy and has stayed that way. In desperation I put some water into a clear bowl and immersed a smaller ceramic bowl with a candle inside into that. The result isn't exactly what I was hoping for......

    ... And Five Cents

    Day 26: October 2010 PAD

Canon 50D, EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, f/6.7, 1/60s, ISO 100, two flashes in a lightbox-style setup. Full EXIF, PAD slideshow.

The old saying was, "[worthless idea] and five cents will buy you a cuppa coffee." Not these days.

But maybe 0.05 Euro will buy a cup of coffee in the US, if the exchange rate keeps going, so I brought this back with me.

    C&C are always welcome.

    Cheers,
    Rick

Wonderful image, Rob. You always use reflection so effectively. I particularly like the way the sparkle shows up more in the reflection than in the direct image of the flower: I imagine because it's in a lower tone. It helps balance the lower image with the upper, making a wonderful composition.

    Cheers,
    Rick

Thanks Rob, yes, not a lot of DOF there.

Love your orchid shot, it’s like a ballerina with her arms up in the air. We have some tiny wild orchids out here that, to me, look like teddy bears with their arms wide.

Thanks, Rick. I think it's because the reflection part is directly opposite the lights above (kitchen cabinet downlights) whereas the flower itself is facing the lens, and is at 90 deg to the lights.

Hi Donald - "all good" as they say - now that I've had my fun with Grant I can tell you the Baby is actually a Bionic version and the 'carer student' is taking part in 'Baby think it over' and has a wee device on their wrist that monitors if they do respond as they should to hungry/change nappy/too hot/too cold crying (that is very realistic)

    Day 26: October 2010 PAD

If they don't respond to the baby and 'fail' the unit - they don't get to participate in 'keys please' where they have (out of traffic) basic car familiarisation driving instruction before they hit the road as a learner and some basic car maintenance with the school Bus mechanics.

Now I haven't seen the statistics on if this program actually does reduce teenage pregnancy or young driver accidents, but at least both are a darn site more useful than Latin! - which is what I had to study....non scholae sed vitae and all that

    Re: Panning

I had a class last night and one of my students had a compact camera so I lent her my DSLR to practise panning. This was her first attempt. Pretty good really. Even the horizon line is straight (without any fix from me).

    Day 26 Paul Weller

I saw Paul Weller at The Forum in Melbourne. The camera nazis were on the prowl, even stopping people taking photos with mobile phone cameras. I managed to get this one with my P&S early in the evening.
