I like the black and white version better.

I find the colour version far more effective than the monochrome one. The warm tones of the whisky and table and the relatively cooler tones of the background and the glass have been lost in the conversion. We lose the effect of the label on the bottle's neck where we get a blend of warm and cooler tones.

To me this is always the crux of the decision of whether I go colour or monochrome. The impact on the composition of throwing away all the colour data has to be weighed against the gains that result from doing so. Ultimately, removing colour data simplifies an image, and at times this helps the composition. At other times this is detrimental to the image. Personal taste certainly plays a part here.

To take a statement that Albert Einstein once made, a bit out of context; "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler". This is one statement I always ponder when deciding on whether to go colour or monochrome...

I prefer this version above the B&W conversion. The tones in the pour are magical, I can taste it from here in Madeira Water of life (original colour version)

Thanks for the feedback Paul, Binnur, Manfred and Peter.

I tried the B&W conversion just for fun and was surprised by the result - much better than expected, and that's why I posted it. However, I prefer the colour version for exactly the reasons that Manfred states in his first paragraph. And I agree with Peter - looking at the warm colour of the whisky reminds me of its taste which the B&W could never do.

Colour for me, Bill...Black and white needs more involvement but this one is very warm and cosy in the eyes once you have your hand around the glass and your back on a laid back garden chair savouring the cool sunlight. Very nice...
