Frog for breakfast

I'm lucky enough to have Kingfishers in my garden each day and decided to grab the camera this morning because there was a chance to capture two sitting together.

What I did learn new today was what these guys have for breakfast

The images were shot in very poor light, drizzle, from a too far distance and have been heavily cropped but here are some just for fun.

Once he had returned to the branch with his meal he proceeded to beat it into submission on the branch. Sadly, shutter speeds were too slow to capture this decently.

Interesting set. Despite the name, when traveling in Australia we saw many more kingfishers around farmland than near the sea. Many were hunting from fences and/or overhead wires that weren't near any sort of water. I've noted the same from our banded kingfishers here in North America. They are very common far from the coast. Though in most cases here they are found around some sort of pond, creek, swamp, etc.

Nice captures Grahame. There is an area not far from where I live where Kingfishers are frequently seen. I find them difficult to capture because they are always too far away.....doesn't stop me from trying though

I have not noticed any of these inland here Dan but with the amount of rivers and water around I suspect there are. At the rear of my garden is a mangrove area where the tide comes in and I had always assumed that these would feed on the fish there, not steal my frogs

Thank you Rita, these were taken from a window of the house but I have found that I can get quite close to them in the garden if I'm quiet and still.

The first one is a gem, Grahame! from frame to frame. Very nice composition. I was watering my pots at the entrance of our house and a frog jumped out from one of them. I did tried to catch it but didn't know where it went by the time I put my container down. It would have been nice to have frogs near my deck so I do not have to spray insecticide there. Poor frogs...but that is the circle of life. Depends on where you are situated on the food chain.

The problem we have with having lots of frogs and toads around is that they leave a lot of mess on areas like decking

They are fun to watch when they jump in the dogs food bowl to pinch any scraps he's left and even more funnier as they dive into the crab holes all over the lawn to escape the brush cutter when doing the grass

As for the Kingfishers feeding on them, there's no shortage

I suspect the speed of these young frogs escaping is impeded by the long grass

we have a blue Kingfisher up here at 400m ASL. But I need a longer lens to get a shot anywhere near to as good as yours
