    Nickolas Conservatory (4)

Here are some infrared shots of a popular, local spot. Taken with infrared modified sensor + R72 filter and converted to b&w. The light was early-afternoon with haze and patchy, thin cirrus. Very contrasty light, good for IR. CC welcome.

    3. Rear view. This scene has many possibilities. Time restraints prevented me from getting other POV's. I plan to return this PM for more shooting.

    4. SuperColor IR filter. This is what my IR sensor captures without the R72 filter. To get these colors, I use a technique called "channel swapping," described on LifePixel's website. This filter doesn't quite give me the dramatic b&w contrast I want so I compose the scene and add the R72 for the shot. I expose at the setting the SuperColor sensor says (before adding the R72).

Stopping down the lens can cause a "hot spot" in the center of the image. Our lenses are optimized for visible light. IR doesn't always conform to visible light design. If I shoot at f/8 or larger apertures, I don't have a problem with my EF 24-70mm lens, my primary IR lens. If I stop down to f/16 or smaller, I get a hot spot. Some lenses are apparently better/worse than others. LifePixel has tested many lenses and has a recommendations for your info.

I thought I'd like the flexibility for shooting "false color" IR plus b&w with the SuperColor IR filter. I found I prefer the classic "IR b&W film" look more. An error on my part, not a problem with the conversion... it works great.

I like these a lot Paul, and I really find IR fun, interesting and producing some really intense images. I have read up on it via the same site you mentioned, but I don't have any filters yet for my fuji. #1 & 3 I love.

The figure in the middle background in #3 is a statue. It is included in lots of snapshots in this area. It is shooting with a Polaroid camera (must be an old stature).
