Conehead

This is the Short-winged Conehead but identification is tricky and relies on seeing its tail from the correct angle.



There is also an occasional form with long wings which looks almost identical to the Long-winged Conehead except for the curvature on that long tail. And just to add to the confusion, juvenile Long-winged Coneheads have short wings until the final adult form appears.

And nearby was a Tarnished Plant Bug. But it was in a hurry and didn't have enough time to stop and pose for a proper portrait; so this was a quick shot as it scuttled past.

And from the same day, I disturbed this resting moth which stayed just long enough for a quick shot. It is a Rush Veneer which are fairly common migrants to the UK.



Not far away was a Caddis Fly. Limnephilus lunatus; which refers to the crescent moon shape at the tip of its tail.

The one thing I have never tried (well, there are lots of them), but one of them is - Macro. I admire the folks who do it.

Certainly a specialist subject, Donald.

If you ever do get tempted remember my previous warning. 'Macro photography is addictive and can seriously damage your wealth'.

Then after the photography, including editing, comes the real struggle of identification which requires vast numbers of comprehensive books all with several hundred pages !
