The depths I will sink to for a shot

I hate having my shadow looming across the prairie when taking shots at sunrise. i find it really off putting. How bad the shadow can be is shown by looking at the two shadows on the oat field to the sides. These are from small willow shrubs about 60 cm (two feet) high alongside the road.

For this shot I went so far as to throw myself into a damp ditch, not once but several times. Set the camera up on a tripod and used the self timer. The shadow of the tripod and camera was easily cloned out, much smaller than me.

Great example of turning around and using the light of the sunrise instead of taking a picture of the sunrise itself. Great light.

I don't know if it's a little blurry front and center from editing out the camera shadow or if you telling us of the edit made me look for the artifacts. It looks like it was a little breezy so it may be just the oats moving in the breeze.

Great shot, though. Well worth the effort.

I was hoping the magnificence of the shot would over ride the few oats being blown by the breeze. The later two shots have even more blurred oats. One of the drawbacks of using the self timer is I can never predict the vagaries of the wind ten seconds into the future.

It does. I think you captured the prairies very nicely, and again, gorgeous light. I suppose with the days getting shorter (especially as up near Dawson Creek) it's getting easier to capture those sunrise photos.

Also, thanks for sharing your technique.

Nice colours but I do like an old barn or tractor somewhere in the distance to rest my eyes on.

Somewhat disturbed by the mental image of a very shadowy photographer lurking in a ditch. You're not by any chance training to work for a tabloid paper?

Never fear. If you look closely at the horizon line there are two white objects. Those are large steel grain bins. I have not neglected those of you who depend on rustic architecture.

I have developed an allergy to the fatuously famous so there is little chance of my becoming a tabloid photographer. Even the thought of Kim Kardashian makes me have to look at a photo of Gandhi for several minutes as an antidote.

Nice image Trevor. I never tire of seeing your wide open spaces shots.
