I really liked your edit on that more than the original; and the new one is also really nice

Taken in LaSalle Park before the snow came. If only she had worn her red coat. Oh well. I will try to lighten the shadows and see if I can get a better exp

    Lightened shadows:

I have lightened the shadows but at the expense of the shot I think.

Possibly you have also brightened the highlights a little too much? I agree that the original image was too dark overall but not sure which way to go with it. Maybe lift the midtones a little but keep the shadows rather dark to add more contrast?

I wonder if there is an alternative crop for the brighter scene. Crop square and lose part of the right side up to the base of those branches and losing the trunk? That puts more emphasis on the distant figures.

Thanks Geoff:. I think a square crop will work well. Will also try adjusting the highlights.

It will be difficult to change that coat colour and get a natural looking result because you are starting from black.

Selecting the area and filling with colour is the simple answer but that will produce a rather unnatural looking solid block of colour without any tints or shading effects. Painting with a low opacity brush and gradually building the colour with repeated brush strokes would allow you to create some variation in colour intensity which would appear more natural. Providing you are sufficiently artistic.

If you were starting from a colour it would be relatively easy to create a selection around the area and change the tint but in this particular case I can't think of any simple answer which will look natural.
