    The Wrong Streaks

I was listening to the wireless at work yesterday when I heard the newscaster mention that we were due a meteor shower and that the forecast for our area was clear skies - "Woo hoo!"

So out a friend and I toddles a couple of hours after the sun went down - we work out which was was North(ish) as thats where the best view would be - we sets up our cameras - starts them off running continuous exposures - and - in rolls the clouds. No clear sky, no sign of any meteors and frankly no big surprise

Anyhoo - the lighthouse is only two minutes drive from the house, it wasn't cold, there was nowt on TV and we had a laugh at ourselves.

It's always good to have a Plan "B".

I've got to get out and try to shoot star trails one of these days, but living in an area with a lot light pollution; that means a long drive in the dark.

Being on the coast helps a little with light pollution but we still get a LT of orange in the skies at night. Like you I'd love to do a proper star trail or even better a Milky Way shot but I'd need to drive an hour or two inland to the really dark parts of Northumberland to get a black, black sky. This is on the card though but more likely when its a bit deeper into winter and I can guaranty a perfectly clear, cloud free night.

Robin, thanks for the photos. Nicely done.

I never knew what darkness was until I spent time in the western US. Our Wyoming house is located in a subdivision outside of Sheridan and the nights are black.

We used to live in a small village in Cumbria where the skies were amazing, thing is I was shooting film in a Contax rangefinder back then so didn't make the most of it.
