Nice composition and a great street photo , creativity and inspirational leads to a well done piece . Capturing a moment and delivering a message is solid in my opinion . Love it .

    Effective image Sharon.

One thing to think about is changing the crop slightly. Removing the yellow coloured bricks simplifies the background, and in my view strengthens the image.

    Yes! Thank you much improved.

Detroit is fascinating to me. Large swaths of urban prairie. Well, sad is a better word.

Thank you. As a disclaimer, I do not exploit. I like capturing and hearing people’s stories. Have always been that way I guess.

A wonderful image Sharon. It clearly shows that he is in "Tough Times" but as I look at this I feel it also show that he is also standing still in a world that is passing him by. Hats off to you for also buying him breakfast.

Thank you Rita, and a very interesting take on meaning. Complicated world we live in, increasingly passing many by.
Hard to fully understand the complexities of how people end up destitute and on the street. Poor choices? Substance abuse? Mental health issues? No support system? I never fool myself into believing that I’m completely immune from it.
I figured he could use some warm food, he didn’t scream at me for taking the shot, so why not.

The condition of his clothing, shoes, backpack etc don't look much like those of the dropouts one gets in my part of the world. he would probably be wrapped in a blanket and have a dog.
I've seen photos like this that where posed. Not saying of course that this was

Mono is an option in many images, but why do you think this version is an improvement over the original version?

Generally for mono to work well you need to have a good tonal range and good tonal separation. Both are missing in this conversion. When I look at the histogram and I see no substantive values above 148.

I'm guessing that you thought it would add atmosphere, but it didn't really work - see Manfred's post #14.

Nope, not posed. Possibly he has gotten help elsewhere. We do have a wide range of homeless in various states in our country. I saw him while heading to a coffee shop before driving to Indiana to check up on my mom.

I had thought of mono, but I liked the red brick wall so left as is. Thanks for the efforts.

    Re: Tough times

I think that buying him breakfast is the most important part of the story of this image. We can't change the world on our own, but we can change the world for that one person on that one day. A thank you for allowing the picture to be taken.

I think the idea of Manfred crop works for me. I think the setting and how you've framed it works well. That is a good street/documentary photo.

Thank you Donald. It's very easy to get frustrated and annoyed at the "marginalized", but sometimes an act of kindness does make a difference.
