An interesting ship now decaying slowly away

I took a number of photos of this interesting wreck and this is probably the best of them. Any improvements I could make?

As for improvements, if mine, I would bang up the contrast and LCE (structure) of just the boat and make the most of that old timber and the rusted metal.

As for composition there's a possibility that a wider format taking the boat slightly more off centre may assist.

I agree with the wider format. It looks like it could be a great golden hour or sunset photo with the water and mountains in the background.

I love shipwrecks and they are all to rare above water.

I find that you are too tight to the subject and the shot need to be a bit wider. The framing seems rather cramped to me.

The B&W works well and in my view is stronger than the colour original, but the cramped look is still an issue.

Here is how I handled a similar shot, a long time ago (2010).

My suggestion is to go back into your processing program and play around with saturation, sharpness and levels. I quite like the image, just needs a bit more punch.

I find it quite useful to occasionally go a bit crazy with the controls, helps to learn what they do. Can reset to the original in most programs so no harm done.

+1 to all of that.

Although I like both colour and mono, the colour version better portrays the decay to me.

There seems to be a hint of a slight halo around the wreck, which has been accentuated by the mono conversion.

I like the black and white more, but it is showing a bit of a lighter halo around the boat that wasn’t as evident with the color version. I’m not sure if you were trying to lighten up some of the shadows in the boat and went a little overboard (pun intended). With B&W shots, I think you can get away with darker shadows and more contrast, particularly with old buildings, boats etc. Keep up the great work!

Thanks everyone for your very helpful comments. Just seen the last two and they highlight something I had worried about - I must do something about the halo! Here is a wider version. Most recent try it was initially wider on both sides, but have just kept the increase to the right, but cropped some off the left, which seems to my untutored eye to give a good result.

What do you think please?

much better. just to be picky there is a line running up from just to the left of the stern of the boat. And there is still a bit of a halo effect all around the boat.

The photo looks fine to me but I would sand back the rust and give it a lick of paint and anti-foul.
