Re: Strange looking bug
A close up of a Common Froghopper, which are responsible for all that 'cuckoospit' on summer flowers.
Or is it an Alder Spittlebug? Both are rather similar and quite variable so I often struggle to recognise which is which!

Re: Strange looking bug
The term 'hopper' is applied to quite a few insects, Les. There are Leafhoppers, Lacehoppers, Planthoppers, Froghoppers and Treehoppers. The Horned Treehopper is a rather strange creature which I see rather infrequently, although I did find one in my garden earlier this year.
The British Bugs website is a good place for learning more about them; although they are a large and complex group.
