    Pumpkinferno

We spent a few hours this evening at Upper Canada Village, near Morrisburg, Canada visiting Pumpkinferno, a Halloween themed display featuring carved and lit up pumpkins. All I can say is that there are some extremely imaginative and talented pumpkin carvers involved.

Good photographs that I had to look at carefully to see any pumpkins. They are certainly not sculptures? that you would carve up in half an hour.

That's some amazing workmanship with the pumpkins and exposed to show it off at its best.

I would be happy if I could just get one pumpkin looking good. These are amazing and you have captured them so very well.

Thanks - Sharon. The site is actually very close to the USA; less than 1 mile / 1.6 km from the USA / Canada border; the very North-Eastern corner of Upper New York State.

During the daylight hours, the USA makes up most of the background when looking south over the St Lawrence River. There are usually many cars from the USA in the parking lot during the summer.

The St Lawrence Parks Commission has been very creative in some of what it does outside of the normal "tourist season" with some of its properties. They do a lovely job with Christmas lights around the Village in December (I expect I will be back with camera and tripod in the middle of December). Fort Henry in Kingston, Canada (another site operated by the Park Commission) does some interesting things too.

Unfortunately, access to the site is restricted to the post-sunset period, and the actual displays are placed far enough away from where people could get hurt or damage the displays to be able to see how they were done. In fact, with the darkness and lighting, the pumpkins themselves are really only visible in the images. I could generally not see them very well while looking at the actual displays.

They seem to be real pumpkins; the sharp edges cannot be easily recreated with other materials. I assume there was some sort of hidden scaffolding behind them to support the display and carry the wires for the lights.

Here is an image where the pumpkins are quite visible.

These are amazing works of art and beautifully captured too, Manfred. As a Kiwi of UK descent I have never grown up with the culture of celebrating Halloween and trick or treating. It is creeping into the newer generations however (an example of globalized US culture I guess). We still celebrate Guy Fawkes on Nov 5th, with fireworks and the odd bomb-fire, although this is becoming less popular - especially since there are always unintentional conflagrations and injuries. Furthermore we eat pumpkins, not as a sweet in pumpkin pie, but as a roasted vegetable.

Your shots are an excellent example of the value of having shows put on by experts - I much prefer going to a good fireworks show put on by professionals than just firing off the odd rocket and sparkler, and fewer people and pets get hurt. As a kid I lost a dog when some cruel b******s tied fireworks to its tail and scared the thing to death.

Amazing works of art! I've never seen anything remotely close to that done with pumpkins.

    Nice captures too.

Actually the pumpkins are artificial and they are carved by local artists.

All very cool Manfred. We are closer to the Vancouver/BC part of Canada. Would like to see your side of the Country someday, as long as you all don't decide to build a wall to keep us USers out ;-)

I knew that from your location. It is a lovely part of the world. I haven't been to the Western USA, but have spent some time in the Vancouver / Vancouver Island for both work and pleasure.
