    Day 31 Waratah

    Day 31 - October 2010 PAD

I've been trying to capture the intricacies of this flower for a couple of days. It wasn't until I gave up on the beautiful colour and focused on the structure that I was happy with the end product.

I've put the best of my October shots together in an album here. Well, they're what I consider to be the best.

This has been a very enjoyable and productive project.

Yes Kay, we have made it. As you know it continued to rain overnight and when I went to check the rain gauge today I was not sure how much rain we had or whether Missy had been adding to the gauge.

I missed a couple of days due to a short holiday away from computers, telephones and all things electronic. We stayed in a Rainforest treehouse and in between entertaining children, spent the time birdwatching, walking and generally communing with nature, The hammock was a big hit.

Agree wholeheartedly - you have a style, a way of seeing things, that transforms into really appealing images - I'm just glad you're sharing them with us

    Hi Raylee,

I like too. No suggestions to improve further, as Rob says; "Just right in every way" and he's knows more about these shots than I do.

It puts me in mind of a crowd waiting expectantly for something to happen in stage centre
    Cheers,

Eerie light emitting from Malborough Churchyard

A lucky chance quick shot for Halloween.

    Day 31 - October 2010 PAD

Another dismal day so I had been attempting to photograph a cactus flower; then I looked out of the window and saw this scene.

A quick handheld shot with wrong settings. By the time I thought about correcting the camera and moving the tripod it was all over.

    Red Sky by Morning

    The old adage:
Red sun by morning, sailor take warning
Red sky by night, sailor's delight
doesn't apply much here in Iowa. Our lakes are small and with even a small motor you can buzz across the lake in a few minutes. So, we just enjoy the colors. I call this last shot of the PAD "Red Sky by Morning". I began my efforts with a "First Light" on a clear day and so this shot seems an appropriate end.

Cheers to all - it's been a fun exercise and especially thanks to Colin for starting it.

I have really enjoyed the PAD and getting to know a bit about you other PAD'ers...my bursts of laughter or exclamations of "wow" or Bl£$%y hell thats good" have always brought my family peering over my shoulder.
I have never kept a diary but the month of October now has a personal photographic record...which I like a lot. I'm considering printing all 31 shots on one sheet, framing it and putting it in the loo...should give the dinner guests something to talk about..

    Anyway, well done all..
Cycling through the woods this morning and found this..

    Re: Day 31 - October 2010 PAD

OK I'm gonna cheat (again) and use two more from yesterday's outings.

    (32302)
    Day 31 - October 2010 PAD
    Nikon D5000 + Nikon 70-300mm VR: 1/750s f/8 iso800 at 300mm
F11 and click image to see at 880px × 1,000px

Wendy, I feel for you; trying to clone over a distracting blurry background element and make it look natural. I tried and failed as you can see - I've spent ages with cloning, blurring and smudging and it just ain't getting any better

Anyway, I couldn't end this PAD in such an annoying (to me) way, soo here's an 'architectural' from yesterday too.

    (32322)
    Day 31 - October 2010 PAD
    Nikon D5000 + Nikon 70-300mm VR: 1/1000s f/11 iso800 at 300mm
F11 and click image to see at 1,500px × 1,028px

It's the Round Tower of Windsor Castle and here, with a little more success, I cloned out a couple of aerial masts atop the tower and some scaffold poles originally projecting very messily into the sky.

Well that's it, until (possibly) January.

I don't know Dave, the teasle looks pretty sharp. I see what you mean about the background, but even that looks pretty good. Seeing as I am working on DOF right now, I have to ask what this shot would have been like if you had snuck up on the teasle with your 105mm and shot wide open. I'm thinking the tealse would be just as sharp or sharper, and bokeh would be lovely? Note the question mark. It's a serious question. What differences would the other lens have made?

Love the castle tower, Congratulations on making it through October. Maybe I will try in January.

Nice going Kay. The "Seven Deadly Sins" was a great idea and must have taken a lot of set up time, but it was worth it. Well done.
