    Mexican Dance

I was enthralled at the whirling of the voluminous skirts and decided to shoot this series at slow shutter speeds

They will repeat this performance tomorrow and next weekend. I think that I will return next weekend (tomorrow, I go to the Renaisance Faire) and use a monopod and use second curtain sync for my fill flash. I will also go right to the theater setup so I can get a front seat.
I was using aperture priority - next time I will use manual + auto ISO...

    Very nice motion blurs. I prefer the ones shot at 1/10 & 1/13 (1 & 4)

Of the main group, 1 and 4 work best for me. In my experience, 1/15th sec generally works best for this type of shot as it allows you to "freeze" one part of the subject which is the face in this instance.

Included in myu bucket list is to shoot Muslim Sufi (Whirling Dervish) dancers from an elevated position. I didn't have the opportunity to do that when I visited Istanbul but, I am trying to find if there are any local Sufi organizations that put on exhibitions of their dancing.

Wow.. I LOVE these!! I like how the slow shutter shows motion. Do you just kinda guess the shutter or just experience. Regardless, I enjoyed them.

These are great. Regarding the extent of the movement blur, I think it is similar in principle to shooting water - a little is better than a lot - so 2, 3, 5 and 8 are the tops for me.

    Thanks for posting these, Richard.

    Cheers.

This one is nice, the lines along her dress make a lovely pattern. I prefer the earlier ones as you don't see her face in this image

Nice set with an interesting narrative Richard. Notwithstanding your objective (which you have clearly accomplished), #4 stands out to me in its own right - super shot in every way.

    Re: Mexican Dance

Thanks, for the comments my friends...

Mike, I was just guessing at the shutter speeds. Next time I shoot something like this, I an going to be more organized.

First, I am going to get to the stage area early enough to get a seat in the first row, rather than standing off to the side. I will also (since I will be sitting) stay a lot longer at the dance show and therefore shoot a lot more images.

Second, I am going to be more organized in selecting the shutter speeds - by using shutter priority

Third, I am going to use second curtain flash sync and use the diffuser/wide angle panel instead of the softbox to get more specular light. I will also use auto flash bracketing to get a varied second curtain exposure...

I am going to see if I can find various dance exhibitions to shoot with slow shutter speeds.
