This was taken in January so no water, there was a streak of sunshine which made the blue basin look interesting against a pale blue sky. I converted to black and white to see what the NIK filters would do to the tones, I ended up settling on a yellow filter as it added some warmth to the image.

Very nice image. I think I would burn a bit in the top left and more in the sky area in the top center and in the top right. Bright areas on the edge pull the eye away from the subject.

I like this. Being very new to the idea of conversion of pics to B&W, what are the main points that the photographer is trying to bring out? More contrast, different shades of the mono tones? Of course one is always looking to be sure the balance and sharpness is part of an image but I've not really figured out what makes a "great" B&W and what makes a mediocre one?
But yes, your image looks balanced and perfect to me.

Thanks for commenting. Sometimes the desire for conversion to B & W is as simple as wanting to display textures and patterns, suppress colors, creating drama, or simply a love for the tonality of a composition. Try experimenting with a favorite composition, any image with architecture or people make for easy choices.

Hello John, Nice shot there. I haven't been inside the building since Jacobs gave it to UB years ago, but there used to be scores of stunning architectural features, all of which were restored by Jacobs after he bought the place. As a university building, quasi public, you may be able to get inside and get some fantastic shots.

Hi Zen,

In the summertime there always seems to be a party or wedding there, I might have to crash one if I don't get invited. The gardens also have a great field of tulips, haven't been able to get the right look yet as they disappear so quickly. Thanks for commenting.
