Sharon, it would have been better (and more suitable to your title), if the surfers were more recognizable in your photo.
There appear to be just dots on the water.

You all are right, it doesn't work as well as I wanted it to ... even the sunset.

Too bad there isn't a delete post feature.

I would say the surf is definitely NOT up.

It is often more interesting to look at shots which didn't quite work and wonder about alternatives than to see a perfect scene, Sharon.

In this case, I think I would crop off part of the sea and create a 'standard seascape' image in a panoramic size ratio.

Sharon, before I started attempting portraits, I did landscapes.
As a "general" rule try to avoid placing your horizon line right in the middle of the photo.

When I was working, I noticed a sign on a co-worker's wall that stated: 99% of success is failure.

Thank you for the gracious comments. . Bruce, thank you and yeah that makes perfect sense about placement of horizon and composition. Geoff, I will play some with it, but the little ant people mean the composition isn't fixable
    Thanks Alan
I realized it didn't work when I looked at it again.
Landscapes are hard IMO, because there is beauty to capture yet it's hard to at the same time. I see lots of landscape stuff, yet part of the problem I have is finding that uniqueness or wow factor. Donald's direction in his long exposures and B&W are interesting. I like minamalist approaches.
Not a lot of opportunity for street stuff here unless I go to cities. Fun to do that.

I think you are being too hard on yourself Sharon.

There was a reason you took the shot, you saw something there but I don't think you have explored its potential yet. I take many sunset/sunrise shots and it's rare to get something straight out of the camera that does not need a fair amount of work.

I hope you don't mind but I had a quick play to try and emphasise the surfers, just an idea.

I quite like the shot in its original form. Even having the horizon in the middle works for me and I read the title as a nice bit of irony.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions, it is a photo from a year or so ago with a different camera, on a trip to So Cal (we have better sunsets here!). I like the edit Grahame thank you. Tony :-) yes.

This image is not strong, but soothing; i would suggest a one degree rotation to right side

    Hi Sharon,
When shooting landscapes it is important to get some foreground, middleground and background. This I believe leads the eye in and out of the photo. In your photo the foreground is missing. And Bruce's comment on the composition also holds
