A few thoughts for you on this image, Bruce:
1. I like the pose and the framing. He looks like an interesting character with interesting stories to tell. You have captured that well.
2. You have discovered the issues when shooting people wearing a hat; the brim will cast a shadow on the subject's face. Fill light from underneath is the best way to counter that, although PP will help here too.
3. I find the image is too cool and has a bit of a blue colour cast. I find portraits usually look better when they are just a bit on the warmer side of neutral.
Nice one Bruce, but a +1 to Manfred's comments
+1 to Manfred’s comments. The shadow is particularly an issue because it includes the eyes. That’s hard to fix in PP, because one often wants some catchlight in the eyes. Fill flash would be the best, I think.

Removing the hat is the easiest solution....
If that is not possible:
1. I find that having the subject hold a white piece of foam core angled up a bit is usually easier than using a fill flash. My original piece of foam core was the back side of a display boards for a school project that one of my daughters had used. That will bounce ambient light and scattered light from the flash.
2. Fill flash is possible, but then you need a second flash, a light stand, a light modifier, method of triggering the second flash, etc.
Manfred, I knew the eyes were an issue; attempted to give a little more exposure in LR: however the eyes looked a little "funky". I appreciate the kind comments. You are right: this fellow is an interesting "character".
Bill, John, and Dan, thank you for viewing, and commenting.
