Jim,
I am not sure what John meant specifically, but I also thought the image is nice but needs tonality adjustments. You have a limited tonal range and low contrast. Here is a quick edit, simply pulling down the white point and moving the mid-range in a levels tool and then adding contrast with a curves tool.
