Re: A little bit of fall
Great stuff, Marie. We only visited Ireland for 4 (or was it 5?) nights in 1995, but loved it. Ah, the Clancy Brothers, but that's another story! The first pic grabbed me - and probably you, because why else would it be first. Whilst I love it - just a subtle vignette would add. JMTCW

Re: A little bit of fall
Oops, sorry Marie, thought I read Co Wicklowe, but you are in New England. Apologies, but my comments stand nevertheless.

Re: A little bit of fall
Thanks Jim. Actually not New England, more like the Ohio Valley. Glad you liked the pictures. I will try a vignette.

Re: A little bit of fall
Thank you, John. I feel like I have known your writing style for a long time, and your comment, "good effort" means to me, that somehow I have missed the mark. I would love your insights.

A little bit of fall
Marie,
I have struggled for several years with images taken on days like this, with limited success, so take my suggestions with a grain of salt. However, maybe I can throw in something useful.
On days like this, one often gets both limited tonal range and limited contrast. Most of these have both. Take a look at the histograms. That makes some of them look a bit drab.
So I took one of them, #6, and did the following edits:
1. Using the levels tool, I pulled down the white point to expand the tonal range (that is, I pulled the slider down). At the other end, I moved the black output level up from 0 to 15. I did the latter in part to brighten the dark end enough to allow for adding contrast.
2. I added a bit of vibrance. This didn't do much on this particular image. It's preferable to saturation in images like this, which will often produce an oversaturated image because colors tend to be quite saturated in cloudy-day photos.
3. I added contrast using a curves tool. I'll paste the actual adjustment below with the resulting image. It's important that I set the blend mode to luminosity. If you don't, then adding contrast will make the image look more saturated, which will create an oversaturated appearance in images like this.
It's just a quick and incomplete edit, but I think it is enough to show the direction I would take these. See what you think.

Hey Dan! Thank you for taking the time to show me your edit! What you did makes a lot of sense. I will try it on some other edits.
