Does it have more impact by cropping along the base of the boat and losing the empty sky above the highest clouds/trails?

I agree with Ian. Just cropping the top (I tried cropping a little bit below the bird that looks like a dust spot) makes this a much more powerful image. The huge expanse of open sky pulls the eye away from the kids and throws the image out of balance, in my opinion.
