I have been after this scene for about 5 years.

I could never get it with the cloud or fog behind the tree obliterating the hill against which the tree would otherwise be seen. The tree against the hill was always too much of the same tone.

Until this morning.

This is shot at 400mm on a FF camera.

I'm glad you finally got the shot that you wanted. There are advantages to shooting locally as you can get many tries to get the shot that you are trying for.

Really great shot! I can't remember how many times I have been foiled by conditions when I only had one chance to get a shot at a distant location which I could only visit once for a short while...

I said I'd been waiting 5 years - Not every weekend. The weather pattern that produces clouds down low, only happens at this time of year and, of course, the tree without leaves only happens at this time of year.

Absolutey. That's what makes Landscape photography different than others genres. That bit of luck.

We just set up the camera and fire the shutter. It requires Nature to play it's part and for a heavy dose of luck to fall our way.
