That is a problem scene, Brian. To my way of thinking, the bulk of the whites are a bit on the dark side, but there are a few small patches which are on the point of over exposure. Maybe you can do a Curves adjustment to slightly brighten the midtones while holing back on the highlights; or use a very carefully edited mask to vary the amount of any brightness increase. Tricky, whatever you do.

Tricky is just what's needed for the rainy day.

I suspect, Brian, you could now boost the overall brightness level a little bit more; but watch for any problems.

Frequently, I do the same with my images. Firstly correct any potential problems then adjust the overall scene to suit.

One of the realities I'm working into is the reality that my best pp is either done rather quickly or over days as I'm inspired to draw out more of what is hidden

Seeing your garden images, many a time i felt that you have a natural reluctance to compose images; not blaming you, but understanding you.....

I suppose it depends upon what you mean by compose. For this shot I moved left and right forwards and backwards a fair bit to place the lowers where I anted them. Then I did a little cropping to refine the shot.
