My only regret is that the American flag (on the Consulate across the street) isn't showing to complete the story. Sloppiness on my part, for which I should have known better.

I believe it is.
This protest was made up of a wide number of political and religious factions, so to see a Turkish flag there is not really surprising.

Perhaps if I had moved back a few feet. As I recall this was taken with the camera held with straight-arms above my head, so moving back would have given me a slightly better vantage point and a better angle to get the building and flagpole into the shot.
