    Should you panorama or not?

I am wondering what some of you guys think about panoramas, they are hard to share and view properly, but i love them! especially when the country looks this good. is it a better Idea to try and capture the scene in a normal aspect ratio?

This is some country during one of my last trips for work.

I can't remember the last time I've viewed an actual printed panorama except in a museum and one was a time line of a creek as it was slowly destroyed through urban renewal. I suppose there's a place for them, perhaps also as a wrap in a circular room. As you've shown here the panorama serves to capture all of the vista, but I think traditionally panoramas are used to signify time or evolution. Lets see what we can do to alter the perspective of panoramas.

I have tried to share them as 360o interactive pieces, I find though in that platform without a VR headset just sliding the image around on a phone or screen, it loses its beauty. I have wondered how i can use them. They do make good banners for some parts of a website.

I love panoramas. Off course depending on the subject. Yours are a good example.

I am puzzled about using a panorama to signify time or evolution. Could you please provide an example or two of this?

    Hi John,

Here is a link to the museum piece I mentioned.

I read somewhere that horizontal timelines are a western concept, some cultures use a vertical format.

Welcome to CiC - would you mind clicking the "My Profile" button on the top of this page and adding at least your first name and where you are from to your profile? We tend to be a fairly casual group here and go on a first name basis.

I do a fair number of panos and definitely end up printing some of them. They can be quite tricky to do and getting one that works well takes a lot of research and planning as it is not easy to get an image that has interesting material throughout the entire width of the shot.

Given the relatively low resolution on most computer screens (2MP displays that are around 2K wide and 1K high), cropping a shot works just as well as a real pano. If you end up printing on a photo printer that uses roll paper, they can look amazing, but one has to go a real multi-exposure stitched shot.

I just finished reprocessing on of my older shots. I spent around 40 minutes just dodging and burning to bring out details I had not shown in earlier versions of it as well as balancing out the mixed lighting in the shot. I'm planning to reshoot the scene this year, but the conditions are not right yet. I have until Jan 7 when the Christmas lights get shut off for the season.
