Stanley Cup Monument
2017 is the 125th anniversary of the Stanley Cup, the oldest trophy awarded in professional sports. A monument was erected commemorating the anniversary on the Sparks Street pedestrian mall in Ottawa, Canada. The cup is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada at the time. He and his family were ice hockey enthusiasts. The trophy is now owned by the National Hockey League and is awarded to the winning team annually.
The monument is located a few steps from the location where Lord Stanley announced the cup in 1892.
