    Hi Jim,
Love the placement of the figure under the arrow !

The image is fairly neutral in tone and I would maybe increase the contrast either generally or locally to enhance the gent's shadow.

That was my first thought; but when viewed with the Lightbox option, a lot more contrast becomes visible so I would be wary of going too far down this 'improvement road'.

    Jim,

I agree with the two Johns: a nice composition, but a bit lacking in pop. You have a good tonal range, so I think even a simple global contrast adjustment with a gentle curve would help. (I tried it, and I thought it did.) the image is also very slightly canted--look at the clapboard and the bottom right. I would straighten it.

Jim - I think your second version is definitely moving in the right direction. The contrast in the first image is good, but as Dan points out, it is still a touch flat.

The other issue to me is the overall proportion between your subject and the background. If the subject is the man with the paper, why does he have such a minor role in the image? Part of this is related to the framing, as the windows make up a significant part of the image and some of it is related to your shooting position; shooting down on someone will often reduce the "stature" of the subject.
