2018 Project 52 by billtils, first quarter, week 2

I haven't had a chance to take anything new so far this year, but had a look at some archived shots to keep the "52" moving along.

The first one of a Chaffinch that has not been aired much as it's a bit static, but I like the colours and detail:

The second (a soldier beetle on a thistle bud) is also one I like a lot and have posted here long ago. I used it as an entry in my club's Nature and Wildlife comp earlier this year but the judge was unkind enough to muse on whether it was a specimen I had frozen and the missing antenna had been broken when I posed it on the thistle. Not satisfied with that, he went on to suggest I should have edited it in by cloning from the existing one - an action that is not allowed in the competition rules! However, I couldn't resist trying it ...

Both very nice, Bill. Would it be too much trouble for you to post your settings?

Thanks Janice, and no problem at all. The Chaffinch was taken with the D7100 with the Tamron 150-600 lens at 550mm, f14, 1/200s, ISO 1600. The beetle was shot using the D750, Tamron 90mm Macro, f18, 1/500s, ISO 1000.

Both are sharply focused with good fine detail and a well blurred background
